Defining the immune system

The immune system represents the body's defense line against infectious organisms, bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms, through a series of steps called the immune response, thus maintaining the overall health of the body and preventing infection. The immune system consists of a network of special cells, White, zebrafish, spleen, lymph nodes, stem cells, antibodies, in addition to a group of tissues and organs that work together to achieve the necessary protection.

The immune system in the human body

There are three types of immunity in the human body, which is as follows:
  • Immune immunity: called natural immunity, which has been present in the human body since birth, and provides general protection of the body and extends the protection of the external parts, such as skin, and mucous membranes.
  • Acquired Immune Deficiency: The adaptive immunity acquired by the body when exposed to the disease and develops continuously, and can be immunized through vaccination.
  • Immunosuppression is the immunity that is borrowed from another source and lasts for short periods of time. Antibodies in the mother's milk give temporary immunity against the diseases that the mother has experienced.

Functions of the immune system

There are many functions performed by the immune system in the body, including the following:
  • The body saves from pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, where it works to remove them.
  • Detects harmful substances, and works to neutralize them.
  • Fights against abnormal body cells, such as cancer cells.
  • Distinguish between healthy cells and unhealthy cells in the body.

Note:
The immune system acts as a natural defense system in the body and works to fight infection. When the immune system attacks the body's own cells by mistake, this condition is called the autoimmune response, which can cause many health problems, such as psoriasis.

Foods that strengthen the immune system

Food affects the immune health of the body, and there are many foods that contribute to strengthening the immune system, including the following:
  • Acidic fruits are rich in vitamin C, which is characterized by its effective role as an anti-bacterial and inflammatory, such as orange, grapefruit.
  • Ginger, which has antimicrobial properties, also helps fight viruses.
  • Garlic, which improves the ability of immune cells in the body.
